HOSSEI, ESSSENSSSE, 2023. Dimensions variable. Photography by Jacquie Manning.

ID: A close-up image of a foot, covered in a white-silver sequinned bodysuit, standing on top of a bucket stilt. This bucket stilt is covered with a mottled brown and white tubular rope. At certain points, pieces of fluorescent orange string spout out of the bucket.

***Please note that priority for this workshop is being given to students at the University of Sydney however non-students are welcome to sign up to a waitlist (see above). You will be informed about whether there is space to attend approximately a week prior to the workshop. ***

Developed and led by independent access curator Imogen Yang, and co-facilitated by movement artists who centre lived experience of blindness and neurodiversity, this workshop will involve diverse sensory, tactile and alternative communication approaches to encountering ESSSENSSSE performers wearing costumes featured within the show. The performers will reveal methods of movement developed in collaboration with HOSSEI for the ESSSENSSSE live performances on the 15th and 22nd February.

Workshop participants will be invited to touch and engage with the costumes and movements of the performers, and to enter an equitable realm in which to develop their own individual or collective approaches to movement. Live audio description of the costumes and movements will be provided.

Imogen and co-facilitators will endeavour to create a safe and intersectionally informed environment in which to engage comfortably in inclusive embodied practice, enabling engagement with the artist’s work and ideas. Attendees are welcome to be as involved as they would like, in terms of observation, participation and rest levels. No prior movement or dance experience is required.

We welcome you to reach out prior to the workshop to inform us of your access and cultural requirements, or suggest adjustments to the workshop structure to make the workshop more accessible to you.

This workshop will be followed by an ESSSENSSSE performance at 6:30pm.

Afternoon tea will be served between the end of the workshop and beginning of the performance.

ESSSENSSSE Movement Workshop is presented in collaboration with the University of Sydney Student Life.
