TEXT VERSION
The performer’s bodysuit, covering from head to toe, is a wild fluorescent combination of yellow, orange, and pink in a tie-dye pattern.
On one arm, the bodysuit covers the length of the arm and the hand and continues downwards, becoming a thin strip of material which dangles to the floor.
The other arm is the shape of a bulky forearm with its large hand in a fist, made using the same fluorescent colours as the bodysuit. Protruding from the outer side of the arm by approximately 25cm is a stiff fin-like shape.
Extending out of the outer upper thigh is a stiff ruffle, which protrudes by about 15cm. Another frill, slightly smaller in size, extends from the knee. Both ruffles are made of the same tie-dye material as the rest of the costume.
On the other leg, covering the knee like a kneepad, is a circular spiral decoration that extends out approximately 3cm. Predominantly yellow, it is marbled with accents of pink and orange.
Each foot is standing on a large circular disk like a sand dollar with lines that veer away from the centre towards the edge, giving a ridge-like pattern.
One breast is exposed due to a circular cut out. There is a hot pink starfish shape covering the nipple. Placed over the top of the exposed breast is a cone shape, widening in circumference as it extends outwards. This cone comes out of the costume by approximately 15cm. This cone is iridescent and reflects different colours as the light bounces off it. Placed over the top of this cone is another cone which does not extend out as far. This cone is made of the same colourful tie-dye material as the rest of the costume.
The performer wears a helmet that has a balaclava attached to it so that the performer’s face is covered, except for the eyes and nose. This headpiece matches the colours of the fluorescent yellow, orange, and hot pink bodysuit. Dramatically arched antennae extend from the top, before curving down towards the floor.
Completing this costume, the performer wears large goggles that contain black lenses. Swirled around each lens is a piece of the colourful tie-dye material, identical to that which the bodysuit is made out of.
HOSSEI says that HEAT WAVE reminds him “of infra-red colours that we can’t see…(like those) 90s shirts when you touch them it changes colour from the heat of your hand and would leave a print…this costume is this kind of entity of hot sand when it glistens in the sun, the entity of the island we are in.”
